Prevention of infective endocarditis
Prevention of infective endocarditis
All patients at high risk and moderate risk of infective endocarditis should be offered clear and consistent information about prevention and reducing poorer outcomes.21
Ensure that the patient and/or their carer or guardian are aware of their risk of infective endocarditis and provide advice about prevention, including:
- the importance of maintaining good oral health, including individualised advice on oral hygiene and attending for regular dental check-ups
- the frequency of recall should be based on an individual oral health risk assessment
- symptoms that may indicate infective endocarditis and when to seek expert advice;
- the risks of undergoing invasive procedures, including non-medical procedures such as body piercing or tattooing
A list of points to cover in your discussion with the patient (see Patient discussion aid) and a patient information leaflet (see Patient information) are available.
Record that this discussion has taken place in the patient’s clinical notes.
